Rent Subsidy
If you rent independently in the Netherlands and your income is below a certain threshold, the government pays part of your rent every month. From 2026 there is no rent cap, so any rent level can qualify. The amount depends on your income and rent. Students with low income and high Amsterdam rents can receive over €500/month. Note: the €522/month maximum applies to your bare rent (kale huur) only. Utilities, service costs, and cleaning fees are not included in the calculation from 2026 onwards.

Check if your rental property qualifies
From 2026 there is no rent cap, so any rent amount can qualify. The property must be self-contained (own entrance, own bathroom, own kitchen). A room in a shared house usually does not qualify unless you have your own facilities.
Check property typesGather your details
You need: your BSN, your DigiD, your rental contract, the address of your rental, and your landlord's details.
Apply via Mijn Belastingdienst Toeslagen
Log in with DigiD and apply for huurtoeslag. The form takes about 15 minutes. You'll need to enter your estimated annual income.
Apply via Mijn ToeslagenKeep your income estimate accurate
You estimate your income when you apply. If you earn more than expected, you'll have to pay some back. Update your estimate if your income changes significantly.
Common mistakes to avoid
Applying for a room in a shared house without private entrance/bathroom/kitchen: it must be a self-contained property
Overestimating your income: DUO studiefinanciering does NOT count as income for this calculation
Not updating your income estimate mid-year: overpayments must be repaid at year-end
Tips for students
Apply within 3 months of signing your rental contract: you cannot claim retroactively beyond that
DUO studiefinanciering is excluded from the income calculation: students often qualify even with part-time work
If you share a flat but have your own entrance, bathroom, and kitchen, you may still qualify
