University Hardship Fund

Every Dutch university is legally required to have a hardship fund for students who fall behind due to circumstances beyond their control. This includes illness, disability, family crisis, being a student board member, or competing in top-level sport. Amounts vary by university (UvA: approximately €300/month); the fund is available at all Dutch universities and HBO institutions.

Up to€300 per month
Deadline: Rolling, apply any time
6 to 8 weeks

How to apply

1

Find your university's profileringsfonds page

Search '[your university name] profileringsfonds' or go to your university's student services website. Every university has its own application portal.

2

Contact your student advisor (studieadviseur)

Book an appointment with your studieadviseur. They assess your situation, confirm the circumstances that caused your delay, and write a supporting letter for your application.

3

Submit your application with documents

You will need: proof of enrollment, your studieadviseur's letter, and evidence of the circumstances (medical certificate, death certificate, board membership confirmation, etc.).

4

Wait for the committee decision

A committee reviews your case. Decisions typically take 6 to 8 weeks. If approved, payments are made monthly at the basisbeurs rate.

Common mistakes to avoid

Applying directly to DUO: you must apply through your own university's Profileringsfonds committee

Waiting until after your student finance runs out: apply as soon as the circumstances arise

Not getting a supporting statement from your student advisor before submitting

Tips for students

Available at ALL Dutch universities and HBO institutions: not just UvA

A board year (bestuursjaar) almost always qualifies: apply while you are still serving, not after

Keep all medical documentation as detailed as possible: specificity strengthens your case

Ask your student advisor about retroactive application if you only recently learned about the fund
