Amsterdam Study Fund
Amsterdam gives a one-time grant to students who are financially stuck and can't get enough support through DUO. Amounts vary based on individual circumstances. It's aimed at students with an Amsterdam postcode who face unexpected financial hardship, for example if a parent lost their job or you had medical costs.
How to apply
Check the deadline
The Studiefonds has a fixed annual application window, typically closing around October 1. Applications submitted after the deadline are not considered. Check the exact date each year.

You'll need: proof of enrolment, a recent income statement (or parents' income), bank statements, and a description of why you need financial support. A letter from a student advisor at your university strengthens the application.
Contact your university's student advisor first
Before applying, book an appointment with a student advisor (studieadviseur) at UvA. They can assess your situation, write a supporting letter, and sometimes know of additional funds not publicly listed.

Apply through the Amsterdam.nl portal with DigiD. The committee reviews applications and announces decisions within 6 to 8 weeks.
Apply onlineCommon mistakes to avoid
Applying after the October 1 deadline: late applications are not considered
Not including a letter from a student advisor: applications without one rarely succeed
Assuming high parental income disqualifies you: financial need is assessed holistically
Tips for students
Book an appointment with a UvA student advisor as early as possible: they can significantly strengthen your application
Be specific about the unexpected hardship you faced: vague applications are less likely to succeed
If you are rejected, you can reapply in a future year if your circumstances continue
