Disability Study Allowance (National)
Every Dutch municipality must provide a monthly allowance to students with a disability or chronic illness that prevents them from working alongside their studies. The national minimum is €385.14/month for students 21 and older. Apply at your own municipality, not Amsterdam.
How to apply
Check your municipality website
Search for "individuele studietoeslag" on your municipality website or call them directly.
Gather documents
You need a DUO finance confirmation letter and a medical statement from your doctor confirming your condition.
Submit your application
Apply online or in person at your gemeente. You can apply with retroactive effect.
Common mistakes to avoid
Applying in Amsterdam when registered elsewhere: apply at your own municipality, not Amsterdam
Assuming parental income matters: it is completely irrelevant for this allowance
Not applying retroactively: you can claim for past months you were eligible but did not apply
Tips for students
Every Dutch municipality is legally required to offer this: look up your own municipality's application process
Mental health conditions (ADHD, autism, depression, chronic anxiety) qualify alongside physical disabilities
This allowance does not affect your basisbeurs: you can receive both at the same time
