Healthcare Subsidy

If you have Dutch health insurance and your income is below €40,857/year, the government pays part of your health insurance premium every month. In 2026, single students can get up to €129/month, which typically covers most or all of the basic premium. Students with part-time or no income almost always qualify.

How to apply

1

Make sure you have Dutch health insurance

You must have a Dutch zorgverzekering (health insurance) to qualify. EU students who work or study here are generally required to get Dutch insurance. Get insured first if you aren't already.

Common mistakes to avoid

Thinking DUO studiefinanciering counts as income: it does NOT, so many students qualify even when they assume they earn too much

Forgetting to apply as soon as you get Dutch health insurance: no backdating beyond 3 months

Not updating your income estimate at year-end: overpayments must be repaid

Tips for students

You can apply for zorgtoeslag and huurtoeslag at the same time through Mijn Belastingdienst Toeslagen. Takes 10 minutes total.

DUO bursary income is excluded from the income calculation: a very common misconception

Apply as early as January 1 of the year you become eligible: payments are not backdated
